Has anyone been up 1920 on Fifes Ridge recently? If not, what was the condition of this road last year? Can't even find any mention of this road on the ranger district's road conditions page...

WA State Patrol's Division 7 twitter feed is reporting that SR-20 is closed in both directions due to a rollover semi truck accident at the Colonial Creek bridge, and that the bridge has been damaged. Damage to the bridge is described as "extensive". No further info at this time. (Update: the SR-20 has been reopened)

July 07, 2016 10:07 AM PDT Olympic National Park News Release Pavement Improvement Work Planned for Park Roads Olympic National Park and Federal Highway Administration staff are working together to repair and improve pavement on roads, parking losts and campgrounds in the northern and eastern sections of Olympic National Park. Intermountain Slurry Seal, Inc. of Reno, Nevada was awarded a $3.9 million contract by the Federal Highway Administration to complete the project, which will extend the life of asphalt pavement in the Sol Duc, Lake Crescent, Heart O’the Hill and Hurricane Ridge areas. The project will be completed in two phases and will occur on weekdays only, with the entire project completed by October 7. Phase One work, including crack sealing and pavement patching, will begin next week and continue through early August. The slurry sealing process will take place throughout August and September. Work will move from area to area each week, limiting travel impacts to only five consecutive days in each location. Roads will be reduced to one travel lane while the contractor is working and flaggers and pilot cars will be onsite to assist with traffic. Delays of up to 15 minutes should be expected. “We apologize for the short-term inconveniences caused by this project, but look forward to improved conditions and an extended lifespan for park roads,” said Olympic National Park Superintendent Sarah Creachbaum. “We ask for visitors’ patience and understanding as we complete this project.” A timeline of work scheduled during Phase One of the project is outlined below. July 11 through July 15 – pavement patching along the Sol Duc Road and in the Sol Duc campground and Sol Duc Hot Springs Resort. July 18 through July 22 – pavement patching in Fairholme Campground, Camp David Jr. Road, Lake Crescent Lodge Area, Log Cabin Area July 25 through July 29 – pavement patching in Lake Crescent Lodge area, Heart O’the Hill Campground and Hurricane Ridge Road. August 1 through 5 and August 8 through 12 – crack sealing along Sol Duc Road. Phase Two work includes micro surfacing pavement preservation, striping and new signage and will begin on August 8. Schedule information about Phase Two will be released as it becomes available. For current road and travel information, visitors should consult the park website at http://www.nps.gov/olym or call the recorded Road and Weather Hotline at 360-565-3131. --NPS--

July 20, 2016 17:01 PM PDT National Park Service U.S. Department of the Interior OLYMPIC National Park News Release Olympic Hot Springs Road Repairs to Begin Monday; All Access Into Elwha Valley Will Be Closed During Construction Beginning Monday, Olympic National Park road crew employees will begin long-awaited repairs to the Elwha Olympic Hot Springs Road, which was severely damaged during last winter’s storms and flooding. Repairs are estimated to take eight weeks, giving hope that the road will reopen in early October. For public safety and to expedite the repairs, the Olympic Hot Springs Road will be closed at the park boundary to all entry for the duration of the repair project, beginning Monday, July 25, through early October. The Madison Falls trail and parking area will remain open, but entry beyond that point will be closed. “Crews will be working as quickly as possible to complete the necessary in-water work before spawning fish return in mid-August, so we are taking steps to avoid any interruptions to their work,” said Olympic National Park Acting Superintendent Lee Taylor. “As much as we regret the inconvenience of closing pedestrian access, any construction slowdowns jeopardize the chances of reopening the road to vehicles this year.” The park’s road crew staff will complete the repairs, which include installation of a temporary bridge and construction of new bridge abutments, along with extensive road repair on both sides of the washout. Heavy equipment, loaded dump trucks and other construction vehicles will be using the road, creating significant hazards for anyone on the road. The temporary bypass trail built around the washout earlier this year will also be closed. A series of severe winter storms in November, December and January led to exceptionally high flows and flooding along the Elwha River. Approximately 90 feet of Olympic Hot Springs Road was washed out and additional sections were eroded and damaged by flood waters. The road is open to pedestrians, bicycles and horse riders, with a small temporary bridge spanning the washout. Precipitation in the Elwha Valley this winter measured 138 percent of normal, making this winter the fourth wettest in the 75-year record at the Elwha Ranger Station. In the four-month period from November through February, the Elwha River experienced a 25-year flood, a 10-year flood, two five-year floods and one two-year flood. People interested in visiting sites related to Elwha River Restoration and dam removal are encouraged to stop at the Elwha River Interpretive Kiosk, located at Highway 112 and Lower Dam Road. Foot access to the former site of the Elwha Dam is also available from that location. For more information about visiting Olympic National Park, people should visit http://www.nps.gov/olym. www.nps.gov

If you've been putting off a trip up to Damfino Lks/Excelsior Pass better do it now. The Canyon Ck road won't last another big rain. As it is there is a slide about 4mi from the TH that requires high clearance and/or 4wd. And the road is sloughing away just before the bridge which precludes getting any equipment up there.

Thursday September 1, 2016 09:06 PDT OLYMPIC National Park News Release Olympic Hot Springs Road Repairs Continue; Pedestrian & Bicycle Access Now Permitted on Weekends Only Olympic National Park road crew employees have made significant progress on repairs to the Elwha Olympic Hot Springs Road, which was severely damaged during last winter’s storms and flooding. Repairs will continue for another four to six weeks, with the road anticipated to reopen to motor vehicles in October. The road has been closed to all entry at the park boundary since the repair project began in late July. With significant progress completed, limited weekend access can be restored. The road will remain closed to all entry from Monday through Friday, with bicycle and pedestrian access allowed on weekend days. The road will open to bicycle and pedestrian access at noon this Friday, September 2 and will remain open until 6:00 p.m. on Labor Day, Monday, September 5. Thereafter, the road will open for non-motorized access from noon on Fridays through 6:00 p.m. on Sundays. The Madison Falls trail and parking area are located just outside the gate and remain open. “Crews have successfully completed the necessary in-water work and the temporary bridge is in place,” said Olympic National Park Acting Superintendent Rachel Spector. “Our crews no longer need to work seven days a week, so we are reopening the road for bicycle and pedestrian use on the weekends.” While construction is underway during the work week, the park’s road crew staff will complete the project, which includes extensive road repair on both sides of the washout. Heavy equipment, loaded dump trucks and other construction vehicles will be using the road Monday through Friday, creating significant hazards for anyone on the road and necessitating the work week closure.
