When fog clouds the forecast, Gothic Basin above Monte Cristo becomes a hike full of mystery and ghostly presence. Even on a gray day, the Basin is a fascinating place of rolling rock hills and valleys, accessible waterfalls, scrambly cliffs, and of course, Foggy Lake.
Though the trail is clear, the Basin itself is still thawing, especially near Foggy Pass and Lake. Remember to keep to your right once you emerge from the trail for the quickest route to Foggy. It’s easy even on a clear day to become disoriented and wander in the maze of slopes and dips.

At the lake, you can circle over to the chute that leads to the Pass and climb Del Campo or Gothic. We stayed at the Foggy bottom, as the melting snow was loosening rocks—the thundering was enough of a warning for us to stay put.

This is a choice place for exploring; plan on plenty of time to boot around. The creek drop to Weden Lake is a green contrast to Foggy Lake, and worth a look before tackling the downsliding trail.

Looks like an amazing place! I have to put this on my list.
The pics are georgeous. They are almost naturally B&W's.
Thanks for the report and beta.

Fine job of showing how it looks in the fog, really gives an idea of how the name fits. Looks like the main lake has barely begun to melt out.

Great capture and perspective. I have to admit, I'd like the shot even better if it was dated 7/1/10 instead of 8/1/10.
