Alta Mtn, 08/11/10
I've been wanting to visit Alta Mtn for a while. Wednesday presented me with a day off, lots of sunshine, and willing accomplices in the form of Jo and Ingunn.
After some requisite stops, we found ourselves at the Rachel Lake TH. The hike up Rachel Lake was pleasant enough, and we stopped for our first lunch at the lake. After half an hour or so, we picked up our butts and packs from the ground and made our way to the ridge, and onto our first false summit. Expecting many, many more false summits, we were all surprised when we were suddenly on the true summit! No complaints though - I was hungry! Again. I snapped one photo of Jo on the summit and I put my camera away and had my second lunch. Jo and Ingunn took photos of everything.
At one point, Ingunn remarked that this is a place where she could spend hours and hours just hanging out. One look at my altimeter watch told me that's exactly what we did. Thanks for a great hike, ladies!

Nice trip ladies!
That cairn sure looks alot smaller than the last time I was there! Must have been some serious trundling going on!
PS how were the bugs?

I'm still buried under a pile of Cali pics and am headed out for a tent based weekend but I'll try to get some smiling cairn pics up before I drop off the interwebs tomorrow.
Thanks for the invite to a such fantabulous destination ladies but not so much for the bug bites (now I know why you put me out in front) ~Mozzie Magnet Jo

You make it sound about 50 times easier than it actually is. Every time I saw the summit, I'd kick it into gear and use up my last bit of energy only to discover that it was another scam. Then finally, that obnoxious cairn pops up, as if the mountain is flipping you the bird.
How were the berries looking?

I stole Zachster away & dragged her up Mt. Baker( no to top, but up, up, up the RR grade) with me- for some reason she thought this would be easier?
BUT- we had not a single bug all day!!
Where was Jasper? I thought Jo was dog sitting?? Isabel & Jasper have to meet soon! They will be twitterpatted.

Uh, Jo tried to investigate a tiny little berry-like thing. An argument ensued whether Jo or Ingunn would eat it to make sure it really was a berry. They left it on the stalk for someone more adventurous. This berry was shrunken and very tiny, bring your magnifying glass.

Thanks all! This group had great teamwork: I called the trip, Jo drove us there, and Ingunn made sure we stayed on the right trail.
Great communication too, such as, "You go ahead for a couple of minutes, I'm going to emit a fragrance that only mother nature will love."
Jo, thanks for taking one for the team and warding off the frontline bugs. Don't worry, you left plenty for me.
Karen the Photo Goddess, I am tickled you like my pictures! It's really a beautiful place and my tiny little camera - ok, really Mark's tiny little camera - tried mightily to capture some of that. You should see Jo and Ingunn's big ones. Oh, that's right - you have!
Snowdog, I am not speaking to you just for the simple fact that you had no bugs on your trip. Hmph.

I've been looking for an easy, dog-friendly, low-bug hike for this weekend, and RR grade was on my short list. It has now moved up the list. If we go, we will probably go up Monday and sleep in the Park Butte lookout, then hit RR Grade on the way out Tuesday.

I have to work on that striking a pose thing. I don't have much experience "working it" in front of two big cameras. The last time (and only time) I had this much paparazzi was at my wedding. But I was prepared; *I paid a lot of money to look pretty that night.
