Shellrock Peak & Burnt Mountain, September 18 2010
Had to drop some work stuff off in Randel Saturday so I was thinking a nice day hike in the Goat Rocks area again. But the clouds were building up fast to the South, And thinking abut the weather report I decided headed a little more east to the Bethel Ridge area. Heading up the hill to White pass I made a quick stop at the Rainier view spot and was surprised to see the Mountain out. Was kind of kicking my self for not heading north as I made the rest of the drive to the TH.
Road 1500 is in good condition if you don't mind washboard and crazy drivers also lots of Hunters setting up little tents towns along the road.
The trail was in good condition, little muddy in a few spots with two trees down but thats about it. The first trail junction I came too had a sign on it "Burnt Mt 1140" and it headed North from what looked like the main trail, following it up, I got the top with in a few hundred feet of the junction. I was thinking i tuned into supper hiker over night covering the 2 miles to Bunt Mt in 20 min. But a quick check of the map said it was not Burnt Mt but the trial down to Strawberry Meadows. Back down to the main trail that runs along the top a ridge I soon made the Real Burnt Mt. The clouds had been rolling in pretty steady for the last 1/2 hr so snapped a few photos and had a bite to eat. Packing up to head off to Shellrock before the the weather set in I had a bit of drama when my camera stopped working, after fiddling with a bit I gave up and put it away and got out my rain jacket instead. A little more up and down brings you to Shellrock Peak, but the clouds had settled in and with no views to be had so I headed back to the truck, making the trial head & truck just as it started dumping down.
trail stats;
11 miles
the GPS said 2900 ft gain but i think it more like 1600 ft
no other people on the trail
Looks like the Tumac LO was removed 42 years ago:

There's a lookout on Jumpoff Joe on the S side of the highway fairly close to there but that is the closest one that I can think of off the top of my head.
