trappers pk 10-20-2010
iron on the summit of trappers peak- l-r:thorton lakes, thorton pk, triumph and the pickets
iron and i were looking for something that did not require an early start on a short fall day. i was looking for something that would not hit snow up high on a north slope and would have great views.
we drove highway 20 to a little past milepost 117 and turned left up the signed thorton lakes trail road. a family car could have have made it up, but it would not have been happy. we followed the main road to the small parking area where the road ends. there was a sign at the trailhead that talked of them decommissioning part of the road.
iron ascending trappers peak with upper thorton lake and thorton peak in the background
the thorton lakes trail heads out on the old road bed which makes for rather soft pleasant hiking for quite a ways. we found water every few minutes all the way to the signed junction where the excellent trail splits to go either to trappers peak or continue on to thorton lakes. although it is said to be a scramble, there is a trail all the way to trappers peak. there are a couple of unexposed class 2 sections of the trail, but nothing that caused a second thought. the ridge walk is excellent, views everywhere. it is the type of ridge you don't want to end. the summit is one of the best easy to get to mountaintops i have been to. this will definitely be on my list of places to suggest.
when we walked back to the trail junction, iron wanted to run over and see thorton lakes. the trail from there to the lakes was rough so he could not run.
we stopped at cascade farms for expensive, but delicious organic milkshakes happy that we were able to get one last nice summit in before the season ended.

Loved your pictures - great weather day for you again! I have been thinking about going up at least to the lakes. I think my mom can make the lakes so . . . I have always just driven through that area on the way to other hikes. I need to get there - looks amazing. Thanks for posting it.

Sheesh, we should all be unemployed! That looks like a whole lot more fun than what I did that day.
