If you were in the Ski Area Management program at Wenatchee Valley College in the early 90s, you were fortunate enough to train with Mr. Schmoker and his DOT crew. Shooting the 105mm recoil-less rifle at the Yakima range and on the Pass is a memory I will never forget. The 105 is a flexible tool for avalanche hazard reduction but the backblast is fierce. The guys on the range raised it to maximum elevation and blew a three foot hole in the asphalt behind it when the gun fired. They have very strict procedures about who stands where and does what when they are firing.
One of his assistants gave me some sage advice: "If you're in the avy business long enough, you'll know dead people." RIP my friends.

So cool! I want to fire live rounds at a mountain to make it submit.

There's also another cool platform across I-90 from Denny Creek where they use a bike to operate a "clothes line" style cable to drag 25lb charges up to the release zone! Eeehah WSDOT avaalnche control crew!

It's an engine block. Don't know what type/size/purpose though.
