In my High School photography class we messed around with balloons popping in a dark room to trigger a flash and freeze the moment of impact. What I did was I used a 60 second shutter speed in a dark room as well as used a 10 second timer (to reduce any motion and so I could get in the picture). Then I moved after every 20 seconds.
