It's the mood more than the music of the Seattle sound that's evoked by Texas composer Scott McAllister's 1996 Concerto X for clarinet and band—"heavily influenced," he writes, by grunge. In the first of its three brief, beguiling movements, random restless outbursts interrupt a somnambular repeating murmur in the low brass that calls to mind the heavy-lidded gaze of a thousand Kurt Cobain photos. The third is itchy and angsty, but always catchy. The concerto's emotional centerpiece is the middle movement: variations, in Bach passacaglia style, on the refrain from the old Appalachian folksong "In the Pines," which Nirvana (among others) recorded as "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?" From the tread of Abbey Road's "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" to the melancholy air of a French accordion waltz, McAllister rings inventive changes on these eight lamenting bars. Clarinetist Sean Osborn plays Concerto X on Sunday with the Seattle Wind Symphony (alongside music by Bernstein, Gershwin, and more) to close the ensemble's inaugural season.

Bumping just in case any of you are not out in the hills, valleys and mountains today. The UW campus is gorgeous right now and is a great place for a walk before or after our concert at 3:00.

Still no love by the masses for the bass clarinet. *sigh*

Concert seems interesting. How about posting reviews? To follow a couple of other posts, slightly or very off topic, I used to play the B-flat but moved down to the bass, which I liked the best. Nice woody tone! Unfortunately this reminds me of the old joke about the alto: "What's the definition of a nerd? Someone who owns an alto clarinet."

The critics rarely bother reviewing anything but the main groups in town. But the audience loved the clarinet concerto and our soloist came out dressed in a nice grungy outfit. I'll post the youtube video once it's up.

This is blatant discrimination against Bassoonists!!

What's especially fun about sock puppets is that you can make each one unique and individual, so that they each have special characters. And they don't have to be human––animals and aliens are great possibilities
