How many NW Hikers does it take to break trail in 2 - 3' of unconsolidated snow??? Just one! That would be Iron!

Our merry band of 12 thieves started this adventure at the Monroe Park & Ride at 7:00 a.m. this fine morning (well, one car load almost didn't make it, since they sat at the Smoke Stack in Monroe thinking that was the meeting place!! shakehead.gif dizzy.gif ). Anyway, we all met, and there were 12 of us - an even dozen - headed off to Lichtenberg via the Yodelin/Nason Creek route. I'd never done that route, but Gus and I had summited Licehtenberg from two different routes previously - in fact, Lichtenberg was Gus' first summit! We were a bit worried about the traffic on our way home, but that would prove to be a breeze. So, this fine day we had (in alphabetical order) Bill, Carla, Damien, Darryl, Dave, David, Elle, Franklin, Lisa, Martin, Mike, and Suzanne! (Oh and Gus and Izzy as faithful canine combo.) We started out from the parking area on the east side of Hwy 2 across from Yodelin about 8:40 a.m. - walked the road to the end and headed up towards Lichtenberg.

Before long, we were in the trees and lots of new, unconsolidated snow (seems to be a theme right now!)

When we finally broke out of the trees, the views opened up a bit.

After loosing about 300' feet, we started our ascent up towards Lichtenberg - 10 snowshoers, 2 skiers.

The avalanche danger was low, so we made our way up and up to the saddle between South Lich and North Lich.

But, we found refuge near some rocks to be able to grab some lunch.

On the way down, Dave met with some equipment malfunction - throwing a shoe somewhere in the snow. Nine of us poked and dug to look for his shoe for about 20 minutes.

Six snowshoers and two skiers reached the Yodelin road about the same time - while the other four were already back at the cars. For us, it was 3 1/2 hours up and about two hours down. Back to the cars before 2:30 p.m. and the trip back to Seattle was quick for a Sunday after Thanksgiving on Hwy 2! We were back in Seattle by 4:00 p.m.! About 2500' of gain and a lovely outing. great fun, with some super strong folks! agree.gif winksmile.gif up.gif

Great trip! And I was happy to be a lazy sob and not do any trail breaking today. hockeygrin.gif Took lots of photos, click here for them all. (and feel free to share this link, I know not everyone on the trip reads NWhikers.)

it comes not without a price --- i took a nice 4 hour long nap immediately upon arriving home. the snow this day proved to be quite a workout - chest deep at times stuck.gif. this trip takes the cake for the amount of knee-kicking (as opposed to step kicking) snow. not many pics to add.

My camera took a crap load of blurry pics today rant.gif (Guess what I want for Christmas?) Also a bunch of blurry vids, so this is all I ended up with, sorry. Franklin, enjoying the end of our descent:

Nice trip, sounds like hard work. Dicey, we have to get you on the Lichetenburg Slot tour here soon. You ski off the steeper north side of the peak, good times!
