If you are going to be out much in inclement weather I would get the Latok Alpine that everyone is recommending.  Here is a good deal on a XL for $180 (will probably fit closer to a L):

If it doesn't fit it probably won't cost you much more than $10 in return shipping.

I got the jacket posted for $180. It just came in the mail today - it is big. If anything, the XL is in between a L and an XL, not closer to a L. It might work okay though.

It completely covers my butt... is this normal? I guess I'd just put the harness over it.

I'm still looking for suggestions... I have the Latok but may return it. The sizing just isn't right for me.

Would a prolite shell be rugged enough for 3 season climbing? I'm really struggling to find something good.

I tried the REI eVent jackets on again and decided I like their fit. The Shuksan felt nice but at 20 ounces do you think it's too heavy for summer use? I like their cheaper Kimtah jacket but it's not helmet compatible... how many people actually use hoods with their climbing helmets?

I was thinking about getting that but ended up going with the REI Shuksan. It was 1 oz lighter than they said it was while the RAB jacket was almost 3 ounces heavier than they said it was.

Showers Pass also makes an eVent shell, the Elite 2.0.   Recycled Cycles has them.  Hood is sold separately.

I bought a Rab Latok Alpine jacket today at Second Ascent. They normally cost about 300 bucks there, but I got mine for 200 as it had been used for display. They had at least one more that was xlarge for 200.

I'm looking for a hard shell with DWR that lasts.   I made the mistake of buying another Marmot Precip last year.  Now, it wets right through.

This thread is from 2011, so how about an update.  What are your suggestions for a waterproof shell that will stay truly waterproof for a long time (if there is such a thing).   Being breathable would be a plus.   And under $200.

JumbleJowls, I am sure that other members here will chime in with recommendations for spendy gear, about which I am fairly clueless.

I had pretty good luck re-treating an old anorak and a parka with a Nikwax product four years ago.
The water repellent properties of the parka have dwindled significantly over that time, but considering the garment has been machine washed several times since then I cannot fault the efficacy of the DWR product.

I have not had the anorak out in the field enough times since then to make a call on that one.

Not sure if you can get into a Fjallraven jacket for under $200, but if I had to buy another "shell", I'd definitely go that route next time around. (Note that Fjallraven's MSRP is far more than what the same items can be had for at any number of online retailers.)
I feel I've gotten my $100 bucks worth out of my "Precip", but I would not buy another one.

Check out the Marmot EVODry line up.  No personal experience, but sounds promising.
