For the forth time in a month i ventured up to the end of the Suiattle river road. I planed to spend the whole weekend up there. Anxious to reach the Milk Creek trail i decided to not to take a break after reaching the end of the road. Crossed the log over the Suiattle and headed up river for the Milk Creek trail. I figured it might be a bit rugged. At first it was an easy dry river bed walk, not too difficult. But a half mile in, the half way point, the main river channel prevents passage without heading into the forest. Devils club while not dense, is ever present. The many layers of blow down old growth seem to choke out most of the brush.
Forest Mess
I reached a point where i could see the concrete peer of the former Milk Creek bridge...i was only a tenth of a mile from the trail.
Milk Creek Bridge wreckage
While scrambling over the jack-strawed trees, i post holed through a rotten one....twisting my ankle in the process.
Knowing my self all too well, and the tenancy to push my self way too hard...against my better judgment i decided to bag the trip instead of pressing on the last tenth mile.
I was soooo close.

Yea, i was thinking about the Milk Creek-Vista Ridge loop this summer...i am re-thinking that trip now.
Yea i soaked my ankle in the river. I wanted to stay, and set up camp....but i know sometimes it takes till the next day to know how bad the injury is. That's a awful long distance to travel. I decided to take the cautious route and head home. Good news is it is the next day and it aint that bad.
On the plus side, it might be possible to wade the rive edge this summer when the water level recedes a bit.

Hopefully the log you found stays and doesn't end up getting swept away.
How easy was the crossing?

Root wad is not hard to deal with.
Went back up that way Saturday, don't know why i was surprised to see milled logs, and bridge wood bridge decking in the log jam just down river from that log crossing. I suppose it could be from the Milk Creek bridge a mile up river.
