To ski or not to ski--that was the question.
Thanks to all the forwarning in previous posts about the brush on the south route, Jake and I opted to explore the big NE basin as a snow scramble---and to dream of future skiing.
The trail has now been maintained to Eightmile Lake and no snow. Nice crosscut saw work on a few big logs.
The approach entailed a nice crosscountry route above the north shore of the lake to the left of the big orange blocky scree slope. First we ascended open forest, then entered last year's wildfire, then traversed large stable blocky scree into the basin.
**We were glad to have not hauled the skis all the way up in there, though the top 2000 feet of the climb did indeed look good!**
Alpine Lakes Wilderness, WA Starting up open forest Eightmile Lake Traversing to basin Into hot burn Glad we left the skis Eightmile Mtn
The snow was soft and easy for step kicking and we found an all snow gully line toward the SE Ridge crest at about 7400 feet (one could take snow all the way to the summit). A couple hundred feet below the ridge we had enough of the snow and opted to enjoy some scrambling up a solid rock rib, joining the big SE ridge at about 7400ft.
Looks good Easy steps Higher Taking a rock variation The rib variant Fun and solid Step to SE Ridge
Then we turned NW up the easy ridge to the top. Descending, we were able to butt glissade most of the way off the summit with a quick traverse through scree to connect the lines. What a great ski it would have been, but earlier in the year is a must!
SE Ridge Nice scrambling Great glissade later! On top West to Daniel NW up Icicle Central rib variation Fast work, almost skiing! Melted out About out of snow Back to lake Last slope down Last view
One real interesting part of the day was seeing how the valley bottom of the basin seperates the orange peridotite from the granite of Eightmile Mtn!

Hi Eric,
No problem at all. We took about 5 hours up and 3 down without feeling the need to rush. W/O snow, though, it would probably be more tedious.
Can't believe folks get over to Hi-Jack in the same day!
8mile scramble route
Happy peakbagging!
John

Thanks! That route will keep me from trying from the North.

That sounds a lot better than an alder-fest.

Thanks for the comments you all. Randy, we best get there next winter despite the long approach!
