Just clicked and confirmed the following to fuel my Alpine Lakes High Traverse in August: Zydeco Red Beans and Rice Dottie's Chicken and Dumplings Big Easy Gumbo (with Kountry Boys pork and beef/jalapeno sausage add-on) Austintacious Chicken Tortilla Soup Also got two two person entrees: Bangers and Mash Shepherd's pie (probably save those two for the Shinumo-Tapeats loop in the Grand Canyon next spring, when I'll have the trusty stomach of Jonas to aid and abet) Thanks for the tip, folks. I will return with a full review. I'm a foodie pretentious camping gourmand and and tend to make ludicrously elaborate meals that involve several rounds of browning and cooking, but I decided that enough is enough for this trip; just hot water this time. Pity they don't have flavored syrups: looks like I could make some pretty sweet snowcones up at Tanks. biggrin.gif

I can say this for 100% certain: you will love the tortilla soup. Just bring some extra chips as one serving of the soup is only 210 calories. It seems more filling because it's a soup, but hikers still need the calories. Tortilla chips are already "dehydrated" more or less, so there's no weight penalty for bringing them. One thing you will notice is how the ingredients tend to be kept separate in little packages within the package. This allows you to remove things you don't like, such as I would take out the extra hot sauce from the tortilla soup, as it was hot enough for me already (I'm a bit of a spice wimp, not completely though, but somewhat.) You can also dump some of the ingredients together and save some packaging weight. What they do to store food for months and keep it fresh really isn't needed when you are going to eat it in a day or so. PS: the website says to not store the sausage meals more than 3 to 6 months. You may want to eat the bangers and mash sooner than next spring, or maybe store the sausage component in the freezer?

If you must eat freeze dried food try getting a pouch of MH dried peas and mixing in a container of Dr. McDougall's split pea soup. Carnivores' might want to add some cut-up bits of beef jerky. It can be pre-mixed in the MH pouch before leaving and makes a filling and rather healthy meal Split pea soup Dried peas

The Dr. McDougall line is very, very good up.gif The bigger noodle cups they make are excellent. Most of the soups are tasty served over rice as well to stretch them, plenty of broth becomes a sauce! And very reasonable sodium levels. You can find them at QFC stores.

Ive never tried PG. I like MH food. The single serving jobbers work well for me.

Yeah the Dr. McDougall stuff was created for people with heart failure and similar. So the sodium stats are very impressive and it often contains beans and whatnot that are good for your cholesterol as well up.gif

For my split pea concoction above: the MH peas call for adding a cup and half of water and then draining the excess off after it sits and cooks. When you pre-add the soup the amount of water is just right with no draining.

You can also do the same thing with MH cut green beans and Dr. McDougall's bean soup. The MH green beans have zero sodium. That one I tried at home but not on the trail yet. It wasn't bad.

My Packitgourmet order, placed Sunday July 24th at 5 pm Texas time, is already in Portland, Oregon. biggrin.gif Not bad for free shipping (on orders of $150 or more).
