Location : Above (West) of Entiat, Wa.
Maps : TOPO, Washington Atlas and Gazeteer
Access : SR 97A > Entiat River Rd. > Crum Canyon Rd. > Osburn Rd.
Stats : 11 mi, 3500' r/t
For years we drove SR 97A and saw Earthquake Point from the car window that spot where in the 1870's the mountain as a result of an earthquake broke off and so much debris filled the Columbia River that it temporarily blocked the entire river. I later saw while mapsterbating a long section of ridge above named, "Ribbon Mesa", the cliff area called, "Ribbon Cliff" and the highpoint which is USGS registered. Steve had a bunch of historical information on the area and we both wanted to check it out. Additionally Steve had never been up Dick Mesa and was interested in that so we tied a loop together encompassing both mesa areas.
We parked the vehicle at about 2720' and did a descending traverse to the main ridge that led down losing 1300' as it undulated on wildflower filled slopes on Ribbon Mesa to Ribbon Cliff and to Earthquake Point dropped down into a canyon then climbed back out again on open wildflower filled slopes some 1500' to the lower part of Dicks Mesa then finally through nice open forest to the plateau of Dicks Mesa. We traversed South across the wide top to Dick Mesa highpoint and beyond to the South side of the entire Mesa and took over an hour lunch looking at Entiat and Chelan Ridges and up the Entiat River Valley at Maude, 7FJ, Fernow, North Spectacle Butte, Duncan Hill, Gopher, Saska, Emerald, Cardinal, Four Mile ridge, Tyee, Sugarloaf, Chumsticks, Stormy, Baldy, and on..., the weather had gradually clouded up through the day with occasional sunshine but the cloud deck was fairly high with light winds making it quite enjoyable for rambling cross country, and the wildflowers were stunning as they have been virtually everywhere this year. Perfect time of year to enjoy the quiet beauty of this area. Damn.
Steve descending a long Ribbon Mesa Ribbon Cliff Islands created after the mountain broke off and fell into the Wenatchee River in the late 1800's initially blocking the Columbia River completely. Earthquake Point Quite a pull from Earthquake Point and Ribbon Cliffs up to Dicks Mesa. Tyee Ridge Steve enjoying a break and the vantage point. Nice spot for lunch and views right up the Entiat Valley. Sugarloaf Large wide open plateau of Dick Mesa. OMG ! I can't believe Baldy is melted out, the road is melted out to the top, and it looks like the South side of Stormy's East ridge and summit area is melted out. Keystone and ridge route.

An area less traveled (but it looks like well worth the effort). Those rocks in the river from the 1800's earthquake were even more obvious back before they closed the gates on Rocky Reach dam and raised the lake level back in 1962.

Just a couple of guys on Dick's Mesa! Must...resist...opportunity to play on words.

I told Steve I would hold him by the belt why he leaned over the edge to get a more vertical looking pic but he declined.

I think you've secretly discovered a way to get high on balsam root flowers. Why else would you be so hell bent on finding every hillside ablaze in bloom?

Beautiful, but I have to admit those shots of you guys sitting in the blooms made me think "ticks!"
Are you doing anything special to deter them? I figure you must be the pros at it!

No ticks or rattle snake encounters this year so far for me, but Steve found a tick crawling when we got back from Twisp
last week. Hit the Trail and I are heading up for some recon and gear testing in the Pasayten so maybe he can be a test subject.
