This is an unusual story. If it weren't for the reported bite marks I might have more doubts but sure sounds like a good story for the grandkids.

Here's a thought. Mom a Bear did not think the old guy as a threat, do she ignored him. If dude was 40 feet from the bear, so was the cougar. The bear simply attacked the cougar in defense of the cub because the cat was a threat to the cub.
