We got out for a nice, quick, easy fall color hike, doing Poe Mountain via Irving Pass. Color indeed! Most all the berrie bushes, etc were almost prime, and suprisingly most all the fresh snow had melted off. Alot of the berries themselves were past prime sadly, but we did find a few mondo hucks and blubes. yumyumyum! The weather was less than stellar but it was still pretty, it'd be even better to come up here when it's clear for the views, but hey, it was still a great trip. Not too much to talk about here so I'll just leave you with some pictures. The lighting was wierd and tough to expose but I got a few.

I love that color! It just changes the whole nature of the hike. It's always rewarding when you hit a patch of berries. We did Hidden Lake Peaks last month and all of the berries were green or barely blue. Finally on the way down we found one patch about the size of a small kitchen where all the huckleberries were amazing--there were tons--we hit the jackpot. Only ripe berries on the mountain. Finding even just a few makes the hike more rewarding! Thanks for sharing.

Wow, the meadow colors finally came out. Great to see it. In some ways, the cloudy skies may have helped. The ground colors tend to show better in overcast light than in bright sunlight. What date were you there? I'd sort have expected to see some fresh snow lately.

Awesome colors! Reminds me of my 3 Fingers trip last Sept.

Go placidly amid the noise and waste, and remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof.

Not unless you count all the water on bushes that soaked through my pants! I suppose there were a couple small 10-foot wide puddles but I don't know if you'd want to drink out of them even with a filter.

Sunday. There was a couple fresh patches but it looked like most of the fresh stuff had melted.

I have a Nikon D3000. Pretty entry-level SLR but it works great! I was using a simple 18-55mm lens and a polarizer.

My wife and I hiked up to the top of Poe Mountain from the Poe Mountain Trail the week before and the huckleberries were the best I've ever seen on any hike:
Made some delicious pancakes the next day.

Tangeman, how is that Irving Pass access road? Map shows it climbs quite a bit up slope to TH; reead some (very minimal) about this route in one of my Mountaineers guides. Says there is a 700 foot climb from TH to ridge top, then trail ambles (up and down) along ridge top toward Poe. Your photos give a delicious look at the place! Great captures; I love the color and saturation allowed by your camera and exposures.

I wasn't the one driving, but it looked like good shape. Suprisingly not washboardy. A couple mini-potholes but I'm sure I low clearance car could handle it.

I gotta do it!! Thanks for the heads-up on road access. Almost headed there, Saturday; however, decided little Skyline Lake would be "OK". Discovered that snow line was low...and Poe Ridge would have been well covered. Snow down on Stevens Pass ridges. Skyline Lake had 3 inches of fluffy white except where warm sun melted it. Chill and shade at relay tower, top of access jeep road, had crunchy snow piled tight to tower structure; views toward Nason Ridge and out toward Poe Ridge certainly snowy. Chiwaukums snowy, too. Labyrinth totally white.
