bought some of the Merino wool socks at Costco and just put 300 miles on them in Southern California;
1 - Über comfortable
2 - Preform much better wet than my regular hiking socks. Insulate pretty good when wet.
3 - They don't last as long as my regular hiking socks. Formed holes at high wear points.
I really like these socks and will keep using them, especially in snow and water, even though they don't last as long other hiking socks. (PS my regular hiking socks are Lorpen Thermolite and another brand I can't remember).
I get my Thorlos through an outlet for about the same price as the Costco socks. The price disparity is not that much.
Can the rest of up know which outlet? Or would that mess it up for you?
The Wenatchee Costco is not currently stocking any hiking socks. I guess they assume light wool socks are only used in winter months. A staff member told me it is not unusual for them to have different stuff than stores on the west side.
My experience with the Costco sox is that aside from the much cheaper price, they are very comparable with my Smartwool sox (holding them, it's hard to know which is which, except for the logo), except for one thing: after wearing them for a day, the Costco sox seem to stretch out (even forming wrinkles), whereas my Smartwool sox seem to hold their shape and size better. But as others have aluded, they're still a whale of a deal for $2.75/pair!
