Thanks for posting those Matt -- it's especially cool when the peaks are ones we're familiar with.

Ok, actually I don't know if it's an island.
It is Smith Island. Hudsons Bay Company crew named it. Watch for interesting bird-critters but steer well clear (shoal, reef). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smith_Island_(Washington)

Thanks Snowbrushy. Earlier, I studied the topo too hard and could only find Dungeness Spit as a potential match but knew it was too far away. Upon reading your post, I went to back into Topo to look for Smith Island and Viola! It's right there and obvious. Guess I was searching too much west and not enough south. doh.gif

Mirage Mountains Here's a more detailed photo of the weird "Superior Mirage", as seen from near Artist Point, on Saturday 12/03/11. I was puzzled when I first caught sight of these incredibly interesting looking peaks....I know this area well, and couldn't figure out what these peaks were...until I shared them with a co-worked, who said "WOW", Where did you get this photo! My appologies in advance if the image fails to load...I have it posted on facebook at: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150409622962972.359943.752647971&type=1&l=f7de26acce

Looking out towards the Olympics the same day, from the summit of Vesper. "Those don't look normal" was the thought that went through our heads.

Great photo Steph! BTW - I've admired your photos for a few years at least! You have some fantastic shots that are inspirational. It must have felt great to summit Vesper after all you've been through... I had a bad accident on Mount Ruth in 2003, and have yet to re-visit that peak.

I saw that phenomenon in Montana one cold winter day when I was a kid. A neighbor pointed out a bluff way across the river that wasn't actually there. It had to do with the air temp. Haven't seen it since. Cool pictures!

I experienced that on a trip years ago. I figured it was an acid flashback. wink.gif Glad to hear there's a rational explanation.

Awesome! That's really cool. Even when you know why it happens, it's still impressive to think about lens effects on a scale far larger than any lenses most of us deal with. (Ok, maybe an astronomer wouldn't be impressed... smile.gif )

Now you get to write the guidebook. I have a recurring dream of incredibly detailed peaks just east of Seattle, like Dr. Zeuss on acid in Patagonia.

Some people have better things to do with their lives than walking the dog. Some don't.
