Oh no. This is just awful beyond words. A life has been ended. A family has lost their mother/wife. A special place has been desecrated. My deepest sympathy and prayers goes out for her family, friends and co-workers. This is so horrible.

there are simply no words to express my feelings. Rangers are hard working people who earn small wage to live their passion. The Times report currently running makes your heart beat a bit fast. Cannot imagine a "chase" on the road from Longmire to Paradise. A bit scarry in high summer, let alone the chill of winter

The shooter doesn't have a chance. We counted 31 law enforcement vehicles enroute to the park after being turned around at the entrance. Law enforcement vehicles from NPS, NFS, State Patrol, Lewis County, Pierce County and multiple cities.

I hope no one else is injured and that they capture or kill him soon. The latter would save the taxpayers a lot of money. Shooter is probably either mentally ill or a convicted felon with active warrants. I don't think drug grows would be an issue in that location and this time of year. Is there anything there worth poaching right now?

Incredibly disturbing and horrible news. WA Trails on Facebook said the ranger was Margaret Anderson http://www.nationalparkstraveler.com/2012/01/updated-ranger-shot-mount-rainier-national-park9239

Exactly. Hope the mountain gets the guy.

What's especially fun about sock puppets is that you can make each one unique and individual, so that they each have special characters. And they don't have to be human––animals and aliens are great possibilities

I'm remembering the Olympic NF ranger who was killed a couple of years ago. I frankly hope today's perpetrator meets the same end as her killer did! They're going to need a sharpshooter team to get the guy, unless he runs out of ammo. My profound sympathies to Ms. Anderson's family and to the entire MRNP staff.

May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view.--E.Abbey

Margaret was an LE Ranger at the park and her husband is also a ranger there. She was part of the training team that did the rescue training when I volunteer at the park as she was also an EMT there. She was a special ranger who loved her family and the park and was always willing to help. She will be missed.

I have 11 essentials, the 10 plus an extra camera battery. http://www.flickr.com/photos/jd_hiker/ http://jdhascup.wordpress.com http://jdhascup.500px.com

Yup, 2008, we were living not too far from that area when it happened. It's been a rough few years for law enforcement in this state. Getting mowed down by criminals, beat up by the media, and laid off en masse.

This is just so sad. Not a great way to start the new year, or any day of the year for that matter.

This is awful and hard to really digest because I have a 4yo and 2yo old at home, I just cant imagine. Then hearing that her husband was working in the park when it happened. What a horrible nightmare for this family.
