Glad to hear your party got out safely. We were on the road to Reflection Lakes around 10:30 when we heard the gun shots and saw the next ranger heading up the road with lights on. We didn't think much of it at the time and kept heading out towards Lane Peak. When we cam back we saw the plane flying above the mountain and heard a couple in the parking lot mention to the authorities that a group was camped at the lake for the night.

Luckily the killer was not aware how close he was to Reflection Lakes and an almost certain encounter with campers and their precious gear. eek.gif

Welcome to the site Jeff. Good luck with the story.

Another media request here. Any chance we can republish a few of your photos? One of our reporters earlier today wrote about your post and there is quite a bit of interest in your story. http://www.seattlepi.com/local/article/Coffee-cup-guided-hikers-caught-out-after-Mount-2438833.php Thanks in advance, -Josh Trujillo seattlepi.com joshuatrujillo@seattlepi.com Twitter: @joshtrujillo

kayakbear I was thinking about those cups If you still have them, they might be good for starting seedlings in the Spring and planting as a memorial. I worked on a Scotch Broom Pull a few weekends ago with the Nisqually Land Trust . We worked on their new Van eaton property. This property is the original homestead for the founding family of Eatonville. I know future direction for the area includes nature study trails. Just a thought to keep in mind.

I think it may be time for a radio though, they said they were trying to call us on a radio but we didn't have one. I've been thinking for years of getting one, and finally have an experience that is going to push me to get one.
Did they mention which type of radio / frequency they were using? CB channel 9? One of those GRMS/FRS two-way radios --Wikipedia says maybe channel 20 or 6? Also I hope you reply to these media requests, it's a truly fascinating & compelling local story. So far from civilization your cell phone doesn't work, enjoying food & alcohol while surviving the same weather and elements that someone else quickly succumbed to. Helicopter escorts and message passing via (total Seattle stereotype) coffee cups. Totally a great story to tell at a party.
