Thanks Kim! I shot this last October, but only yesterday got a notion  of how to process  it to pull out what I was seeing/feeling on the spot. Rummaging through the archive...

It's that time of year when I spend time getting insect-bitten while vainly trying to find a fully pleasing visual composition in a clump of this plant with so many names...

I know it as false hellebore.  I believe in California they refer to it as corn lily.  How many other names does it have?

Wikipedia, which actually tends to be surprisingly good on topics like this one (per a former encyclopedia editorial director I know who did some core sampling of their various topics as "competitive research" some years  back, and who  said the science articles were "close to as accurate as  Britannica, but a lot more  comprehensive" - I'm paraphrasing), lists the  following:

Quote:
The species has acquired a large number of other common names within its native range, including American false hellebore, American white hellebore, bear corn, big hellebore, corn lily, devils bite, duck retten, itch-weed, itchweed, poor Annie, blue hellebore and tickleweed.

Lovely shots of Rainier, Mike -- the colors are so subtle. And wilson, I really want to go down there sometime. And joker, I think the false hellebore is one of the most picturesque plants in our mountains.

I was up in the Wild Sky Wilderness yesterday and came upon a mini-drama on a flower.

I was photographing wildflowers in the Wild Sky wilderness and notice that this bee wasn't moving. Then I looked closer ... Nikon D5200, Micro-Nikkor 55mm f2.8 at f8, 1/200th.

A friend and I made the long drive to Winthrop and up to the Billy Goat trailhead on Saturday. We hiked to Billy Goat Pass, then on to Burch Mountain and return. Most of that hike is through the Diamond Fire burn from 2017 -- at once sad and exhilarating. So many beautiful spots gone, but the flowers!
