rotf.gif hilarious stuff ... and so true but on a more serious note .. that's what the stewardship forum is all about .. expressing opinions which inevitably leads to arguing about the different sides of the issues .. unfortunately it often leads to ridiculous name calling too ..

Discussions that lead to arguments aren't necessarily evil of themselves but the name-calling is what brings the place down. If I've ever called anyone a name here, I deeply apologize for I value the Stewardship forum very highly.

I heartily agree. I'd expand it beyond name-calling to any turn of the discussion toward describing the other posters instead of sticking to discussing the topic at hand. It is so very tempting, e.g. describing the mindset and motivations of the person who is making the counter argument. I've done it in the past, and I'm not proud of that fact. I've watched this happen here and elsewhere, and it never adds anything constructive to the discussion, but it often derails things. It might be cathartic or amusing for the person doing it, but that does not seem like a good enough reason to do it. On the other hand, even very strident arguments here that sometimes go circular that stick to the topic at hand without veering into disrespect of the other posters have helped me think much more deeply about important topics.
