Coming back from mainland Europe I had one day in Iceland so I decided to do a few peaks. The first one, Kirkjufell (1519 feet), is located on the north side of the Snæfell peninsula. I climbed to just below 1000 feet, being cautious of the strong winds and light snow. Above the third major cliff band, route finding was difficult on thin down-sloping ledges of wet grass. It sort of reminded me of the ledge crossing on the south side of Sloan Peak back at home, except above each narrow ledge I came to another. Exposure and a lack of time enabled me to make the decision to turn around.

I knew before hand that if I failed on Kirkjufell, another peak called Akrafjall near the town of Akranes should be much easier. There is no established trail on the north summit which is higher than the more popular south summit, but whispers of a boot path can be found here and there among moss covered loose rock. I started around 100 vertical feet at 6pm and ascended along the west ridge past a sharp looking false summit to the true summit (2110 feet) and made it back to the car at 8pm. This peak has interesting ledges on the north face somewhat similar to the ones I was climbing on Kirkjufell.

beautiful country, gorgeous photos.
The mountain is a striking feature, it's near Grundafjordur, isn't it? The meadowy valleys nearby are verdant during the summer, quite striking in the setting light.
How did you get there from Keflavik? Did you rent a car and just drive up? Snaefell peninsula is a few hours' drive on its own...

You sure know your way around this part of the island. It is the peak right next to Grundarfjörður. May I ask when you were there?
I did rent a car which was surprisingly cheap compared to the cost of things like lodging and food. Most people do the "Golden Circle" by bus but I wanted to see more mountains and Snaefell Peninsula seemed like a good place for that.

By the way... What is that weird-looking fish?
It looks like something straight out of a H.P. Lovecraft novel!

I was there from mid-July 2010 to mid-August 2010. I spent a day in Iceland, then left for two weeks in Greenland (west coast) then returned to Reykjavik, rented a car and drove around the island, avoiding the Ring Road as much as possible. What a great great country!!

Very cool pictures. I admire your ability to make so much of one day. And where are all those weird characters hiding on the keyboard?
