This morning I drove up the Icicle to within a half-mile of the Rock Island CG. There is still a stretch of snow-covered road at that shaded spot. I drove back down to the old Chatter Creek Guard Station, parked and walked down to the hiker bridge across the gorge. On the other (south) side of the river, I expected to hit major snow, but was pleasantly surprised to only encounter some areas of firm consolidated stuff. No post-holing on this day!
Some patches still on 5/6/12
Icicle Gorge Trail (5/6/12)
As I neared Rock Island everything opened up.
6600 Ridge
Snow is gone in sun-drenched areas.
Some new snow on 6600 Ridge. (5/6/12)
I had my lunch in the sun along the river and then walked the road back to my car. I talked to a couple back-country skiers heading up toward Sylvester Lake and saw a couple other hikers on the road. I had almost forgot how much shorter the Gorge Trail is again with the re-opening of the road last fall.

That it is! That was my daughters first hike. We went back in October when she was only 3 months old!
Thanks for the report. We'll have to get back up there and do this trip again soon.
