Thanks for the update Daryl, Will look into that when I get home today. I have been using google my tracks just to track my hikes. These apps look more useful to navigate with.
Thanks Daryl, I had not heard about that one.
I checked the view ranger site and learned that they use Bing Aerials.
If I use Bing maps to look at an aerial of my home I see an image from last year. But if I zoom in a bunch then the image changes to an aerial that includes a large tree that was removed about 20 years ago!
I wonder how much of the country is covered by these old aerials if you zoom in on Bing.
I've use OruxMaps. It's easy to download google terrain for a region, but that doesn't show any trails. I also manually load the t4 topo layer from gmap4 by making a large image and then using the desktop version of OruxMaps to make tiles from the image, which takes way too long but the maps are great. It would be sweet if there was a gmap4 WMS endpoint.
Nope - no Gmap4 WMS endpoint.
But USGS plans to standup a WMS service that will provide the "t4 Topo High" maps. Look for this in 2014.
Thanks for the OruxMaps tip. That looks very intriguing for Android users since it can display calibrated aerials that I provide.
