Yep, I use a bag because my repurposed saline bottles have too big of a mouth on them to attach to the actual filter (though they are perfect for my SteriPen!), not to mention the vacuum created would make the filter ineffective (and blow the gasket, apparently)...but I know there have also been issues with the Sawyer bags (hence the reason I use the Evernew bags).

How do you carry the bag?

In my pack rolled up until I need it at camp or on the trail. I only use them to filter water at camp, I rarely need to fill up on the trail. I use two 1L re-purposed Saline/Pedialyte bottles from work for water bottles. They weigh 55g empty each. My 1.5L Evernew bag weighs 40g. I carry two, 3L is usually enough to fill up my two 1L bottles for when I am hiking and another 1L for cooking breakfast and dinner at camp. If I am dayhiking, I only bring one 1L water bottle and one of the Evernew bags. I know what works for me. I do have a water bladder but rarely use it anymore. Water bottles are just easier to fill up and also to keep track of how much water I am drinking.

After today's hike I've decided that the Sawyer will not be used on a bottle.. it will stay in my pack to be used if I ever actually have to filter water. The bottle fell today and the cap got stuck on the Sawer then I broke the part that is to keep to cap from coming all the way off. Next time I had to take off the cap it was on too hard yet again. I had to find a log to jam it against.. won't take much of that for the nipple to break off. Also the tall bottle that is required if you're going to be squeezing keeps falling out of my pack pocket. I'm switching back to short fat bottles and will used my 1 liter platy bag with my Sawer to filter water if need be.

I'm guessing you're not using the Smart Water bottle cap mod? Are you still using the original cap that came with your filter? http://www.barefootjake.com/2013/04/replacing-my-sawyer-filter-cap.html

renegadepilgrim, Ranger Rock is using the Sawyer Mini so switching caps is not an option. I'd be wary of flimsy caps. Those smart water bottle caps are also weak and that same piece that holds the cap may also break off all the way. I think she's looking for gear that she doesn't have to worry about.
The cap on my bottle broke. A container for water is one of the critter style three essentials so I always have a back up or two.

Here's some more gear that's falling apart on me. And, let's not get started on my broken trekking pole collection.
This is why I don't carry an ultralight backpack.

I broke the lanyard loop on my GPS.

I don't know if I want an ultralight pack. Even this tough pack is showing wear. It didn't look that worn this morning.

I like my ultralight pack. I've taken it on over 50 hikes now and the only damage is a rip to the mesh. It's been on some pretty good bushwacks too. I think the mesh tore on some rocks that I had to squeeze beteeen. My GPS is bomb proof it's lasted me years and years.. I used it until the buttons wore off then got it refurbished. My DSLR camera seems well made too, it's been on hundreds of hike and it's still going strong. Camera Shutter Count Find out how many shots your Digital SLR has taken Results Shutter count 60019 NIKON D90 60% of this model's expected shutter life I've only had one trekking pole failure and Lekki replaced those for free. But I do not like the twist locks they don't work well, not sure if I call that failure or not though.

I admit being hard on my gear but it's on accident. Like when I'm are coming down big rocks the bottom of my pack is hitting on them. Sometimes it's on purpose like when I'd rather just throw my pack down a cliff or waterfall. If I ever take a bad fall the only thing broken would be the Sawyer Squeeze on the outside of my pack.
