This is a short hike just outside Bend Oregon to a pretty alpine lake at the base of Broken Top Mountain in the Three Sisters Wilderness. Take the forest roads across the highway from Mt Bachelor Ski Area. For the most part I was lucky the wind was blowing the smoke from the Pole Creek fire away from me.

Bravo! That's one of my favorite places, and your pictures have captured it well.

I've gotten to it from Tam McArthur Rim and past Broken Hand, but it sounds like you approached it from the south?

Yeah, I came up from the south - thought there would be some cross country but there was a well established trail (make sure you have a high clearance vehicle!). Last time we tried getting in there the plan was from Tam McArthur Rim but that day proved to be just too windy.

So which way is better (faster/easier) - from the Rim or from the South? I've been curious about this area ever since Marc Adamus posted a photo of this tarn - although somehow Marc found it bursting with flowers. Wonderful composition as always. up.gif

Was just down in Bend for our first visit to the area - we got up to Green Lakes (yeah, following the crowd, I know, but it was nice and we had that first peninsula all to ourselves when we got up there late one weekday afternoon...), so this TR finds me primed and intererested in learning about more cool hikes such as this one.

Here is the best I could do with the "flowers" smile.gif South is definitely faster... it's only a couple miles hike.

The south route is much easier... we parked on the side of the forest service road just north of Moon Mountain (Point 7459 on the map) instead of starting from the Crater Ditch Trailhead. Trip report for Broken Top Crater and Broken Hand. Many, many years ago we made the forest service road drive from the Mt. Bachelor area (passing just south of Todd Lake) over to Three Creek Lake just north of Tam MacArthur Rim... and it is a brutal drive... as the road continues to get worse the further you drive it.
