MAZAMA, Wash. (AP) -- Officials say numerous high elevation trees - some of them apparently hundreds of years old - were cut down or topped in the North Cascades last winter by a Mazama-based helicopter skiing company. The Wenatchee World reports ( http://tinyurl.com/9qzynss ) that the Methow Valley Ranger District says North Cascade Heli-Skiing cut the trees to create safer helicopter landing sites. But the company was not authorized to remove vegetation in its permit to bring skiers into high elevations on the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. Backcountry skiers reported two more areas where trees were cut after the Forest Service met with the company and issued a notice of noncompliance for one of the sites in March. Paul Butler, one of the owners of the helicopter company, has apologized for the mistake and expects the permit will be placed on probation.

Sound like they were thinking it's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

Their license should be suspended or revoked for that. NOT acceptable, and I'm as enthusiastic of a BC skier as anyone.

Wow I love skiing but this is awful. The damage is essentially permanent as the trees will take hundreds of years to regrow. Revoking their permit is not enough. There should be criminal charges. This is essentially vandalism.

I hate helicopters. I just hate helicopters. They've earned it. You can't get away from them anywhere anymore.

Screw 'em. Revoke their permit and press a monetary claim.

TACOMA, Wash. — A Quilcene man has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for helping to steal maple trees from the Olympic National Forest. John Mark Randall on Tuesday also was ordered to serve three years of supervised release and pay more than $8,800 in restitution. He was convicted by a U.S. District Court jury in Tacoma in April of conspiracy, damaging government property and theft of government property. Prosecutors say the 50-year-old Randall hired men to illegally harvest high-quality maple trees, a source of wood for musical instruments. The three other men charged in the case were sentenced in May to probation, with each to pay about $2,200 in restitution. --- Information from: Peninsula Daily News, http://www.peninsuladailynews.com

Meh, seems like an honest misunderstanding that'll get worked out between the company and the FS. Seems like it'd be hypocritical for the FS to be punitive with them as Smokey is happy letting logging companies do far worse to the mountains. In the meantime, its a good reminder for me to make a reservation with them for this winter.

Smokey does NOT allow logging in fragile areas. Or much of any areas anymore. Get educated.

What's especially fun about sock puppets is that you can make each one unique and individual, so that they each have special characters. And they don't have to be human––animals and aliens are great possibilities

They don't call it logging anymore. Now they call it "pre-commercial thinning"
