We were thinking about South Ingalls Peak as we drove up to the Esmerelda Basin Trailhead at the end of the N. Fork Teanaway Road... however, when I stepped out of the car onto a thin layer of ice, doubt started to surround my thoughts of reaching South Ingalls... and the doubt continued to grow as the dusting of snow at the trailhead increased to 6 inches by the time we reached Ingalls Pass (6500')... and the 12 inches of snow in Headlight Basin made for an easy decision to scale back the expectations and settle on a Fortune Peak loop trip. From Ingalls Pass we followed the snow trench around toward Ingalls Lake for a quarter mile... then left the trench and started making a new one... as we wound our way around and between exposed boulders until ~6900 feet... where we found boulder-free snow that led to Fortune's east ridge (~7200')... leaving a short hike to the summit (7382'). We made a loop out of the trip by returning via Fortune's west ridge... dropping into the small basin on the SW side of the peak... where we found the County Line Trail that led us down to the Esmerelda Basin Trail... leaving a 3 mile hike back to the car on an easy-to-follow trail. 8.5 miles roundtrip, gaining 3190 feet of elevation. The sunshine, blue sky, larches and pristine condition of the snow made for continuous smiles throughout the day. Nice meeting HikingQueen, HikerMama and one of their friends in Headlight Basin. Some members of our group forgot to bring their gaiters... tsk, tsk... bawl.gif GPS route and photos of our loop trip to Fortune Peak. ..

Cool. Love it up there. Great time of year to do that route in the fresh snow. up.gif For those thinking about doing Fortune, note that there's also a nice route via bench travel on the S side of the Ingalls/Esmeralda divide that goes past Lake Camp Fire Girls (which may be a dry mud flat this time of year). There's one short scrambly stretch to get around a crag before gaining the SE ridge of Fortune.

Hikingqueen, Hiker Mama and one of their friends were ahead of us and did all of the heavy lifting.
