Does anybody have any idea when REI will have their next Sale and 20% off coupon for members? I need to get a new backpack for bike riding to work but I'd like to save a few bucks if I can. Thanks

They will have other sales though. Usually do a 25% off REI-branded gear near Christmas to clear out the previous years offerings.

In the past they've run a Winter Sports Sale Nov 21-30. Don't remember if that included the common 20% off coupon. I've asked about next sale and coupon dates before and they glady told me.

Buy item today, re-buy same item later with coupon, return new item. REI gets $ sooner assuming customer would have held out for coupon. Customer does not have to wait for coupon to use item. Win win.

except rei has to eat the cost of the first item when they have to discount the resale of the returned item at the garage sale.

Why would they need to discount the returned item? It should be brand new / completely unused. Why would you return the item that's been working well for you for months?

That would be a good thing. They've earned it. Take a look at online places like Turns All Year, there's usually a ton of packs of all sorts there. Not all have avalungs either, but for riding around here in the winter maybe you want that. If you or a friend has a Chinook book there's often coupons for Feathered Friends, 2nd Ascent and sometimes some other local independent shops in there. The new ones are on sale so you can check those out. rei should be your absolute last source for gear. They are too busy selling yoga pants designed to fight zombies in.

Often you can find out early about those coupons by checking Retail Me Not: http://www.retailmenot.com/view/rei.com They will often post that it will happen a week in advance.

I like REI. They're convenient, they stock tons of good, reliable gear, and they have great customer service. And yes they carry the yoga pants you complain about and plenty of other non-climbing related gear because (surprise!) they sell well and make profit for the company. They may not stock the more esoteric brands, but this is largely because 1) gear from these companies may be more expensive and may not sell as well (only have limited shelf space, and it costs money to stock more SKUs), 2) the smaller companies may not be able to supply product in the quantities that REI requires, and 3) those companies may not be willing to negotiate prices for their gear which make it cost effective for REI to market, stock, and sell them. So yeah, the model favors larger companies that can ramp up production and bring down costs, but it's no reason to begrudge them their success.

Actually, REI is a co-op. The REI Foundation is a non-profit entity. wink.gif http://www.rei.com/about-rei/business.html

REI is registered with the WA Secretary of State a non-profit entity.
