This makes a fun loop hike of around 12 miles that has lots to offer: highpoints, lookout site views, larches, big river valley, fine trails, goats, exercise!
The loop: Goat Peak Trail to American Ridge Trail and over Goat Peak 6473'. Along American Ridge with a sidetrip to the Pt. 6197' highpoint. Then down Pleasant Valley Lake Trail. Return via the Pleasant Valley (xc ski) Trail along the American River back to the trailhead.
The Goat Peak Trailhead is right on Hwy 410 and climbs close to 4 miles to the Goat Peak Lookout on some steep but wonderfully aesthetic trail with great views expanding.

Once on Goat Peak the views closed in considerably with the oncoming storm front. But I did manage to see a couple goats.

From the lookout I headed west on the American ridge Trail to tag Point 6197' because it has more than 400 feet of prominence. I love ridge walking!

After that the clouds really came in so it was time to descend through an interesting lodgepole pine and larch forest with quite an open understory through the Pleasant Valley Lake drainage. The trail descended to meet the Pleasant Valley Trail at the American River which brought me back to the trailhead after a nice valley walk.

Tomorrow may be the last opportunity to view larch in fall glory so go get it!

That was a great little loop. Great views for the Southern Cascades. Did it Monday with nice relatively warm sunshine. If it was me, having done the loop, I'd probably just do the Goat Mountain trail up and down next time. Although, the last two miles going back to the car along the river take you through what has to be a nearly unique east side Western Larch/Fir/Engleman spruce forest with trees of all species to 4' in diameter. It's worth doing the loop at least once for travel through that forest.
Thanks for the suggestion. Folks we ran into on the hike said that the Goat Creek trail was also very nice and perhaps the easiest on the mountain, though more forested than from the American River side.
The Green Trails Bumping Lake Quad was very adequate for all the options. This doesn't appear to be a heavily used area and I would think it best in the fall after the Lyall's larch show or maybe in early summer. I'd bet it is pretty floral near Goat Peak.

Love that area - go car camping there a couple times a year and have attempted to hike the Goat Peak trail to the top a couple times in mid July but been thwarted by snow both times a few hundred feet below the summit.
Very scenic with the larches in full color like that. Didn't realize the Western's held their color this late in the year.

Sorry folks, don't mean to appear to self promote but I thought I'd bump this up for late fall hiking ideas. I think western larches will still hold their needles for another week or so and there are plenty of them on American and Nelson Ridges as long as Chinook Pass stays open!

I wonder if there will be any weather windows next week. This weekend's taken up with crappy weather and Suiattle festivities.
