A couple of days ago, I encountered a Bengal cat named Hobbs taking his owner out for a hike on the Big Tree trail off Newport Way. Hobbs was off leash, very friendly and quickly started playing with my trekking pole. He and his owner were heading back down, but Hobbs owner had to keep his cat from following me back up the trail. Not having a dog, I haven't paid attention to whether or not this trail requires dogs to be leashed, but Hobbs is a cat, so I guess that was OK. In 45 years of hiking, this is only the second time I've seen a cat (domestic) on a trail.

the only time I ever saw a domestic cat on a hike, it was riding high on it's owners pack and clinging on tight.

@Badger: Thanks for the follow up story on this. My cat used to hate another cat that lived in our house. However my dog bullied the other cat, and sure enough she came to the rescue to scare/fight the dog away. Even enemy cats don't put up with this. Personally I believe cats care more than some people are willing to give credit.

There's a reason why our feline friends have been so successful on our Rock.
No one seriously wants to take a cat on. Not the dog, not the kids, no one.
...wait...are we just going to hang here or go hiking?
