Looks like an interesting spot. One of the few ancient spiritual/ceremonial centers whose location is precisely known. Apparently there is oral history of mammoth hunts occurring there. It's a shame that the tribe feels the need to close off access to the rock. It was hard to tell for sure from the articles I've read, but it sounds like the site itself may still be open to visitors, for now... anybody know for sure?

They are closing off climbing and that's all, so far. "A new management plan has been developed that will allow continued but controlled public access, he said. Tribal plans include information kiosks to teach visitors of the history of the site"

$10,000/acre sounds like a sweetheart deal. I wonder what is was worth on the open market?

Um, nothing, if the state parks are going to help the purchaser manage it as protected land. This was not an outright purchase, they bought it from a land trust under certain conditions.

Good for them. It's great that the tribes are slowly taking back some of the sacred land that was stolen from them. I'm looking forward visiting the Tamanowas Rock Casino when it opens.

The access easement across the 3 parcels lead to the acreage acquired by Washington State Parks to the north as part of this 3-way transaction that has been in the works for many years. This added land to the north will expand Anderson Lake State Park (ALSP). The most promising trail access between the "Tri-Area" (Chimacum, Irondale, Port Hadlock) and ALSP is across the Rock parcels and then on through the expanded ALSP. This ultimately will be the best connector to allow these communities to access the Olympic Discovery Trail and the Pacific Northwest National Scenic Trail. These trail (will) lead to Port Townsend, Sequim, or the Olympic National Forest. The problem? The current Sanctuary Plan does not simply close off climbing. It closes off access for bicycles and horses across these parcels. We are advocating to the Tribe, JLT, and State Parks on having the Sanctuary Plan amended to allow through trail use. This can be done without approaching the Rock.

Wow! Thanks for posting, Mike. So the Mastodon with the 13,800 year old projectile in it is the oldest evidence of human inhabitants in all of North America. And you can go look at it in Sequim at the Museum and Arts Center. Cool Article about the discovery called Bones of Contention

I think the oldest now is in Virginia. Spearheads and ceremonial points found that are of identical design to those in Stone Age France/Spain. Predating the Sequim site by about 8,500 years.
