Should a foot long sandwich be a foot long? |
Yes, if they call it a foot, it should be a foot. |

I would say it needs to be at least 11-inches |

It doesn't matter. As long as it looks like the picture on the readerboard. |

What if the bun is 10-inches, but the onions hang out an inch on either side? |

Get real! Everyone knows a foot is not a foot. It is culinary poetic largesse. |

If a Subway footlong sandwich is 10 inches instead of 12, I am not going to quiznos, er I mean, quibble. If a footlong hotdog is 10 inches, it is not a problem. I just want somthing substantially longer than a half-foot. Now if it were 9 inches, I would probably be upset. and if my 12 oz bottle of MGD had only 11 ounces, I would be furious!

To be frank I'd rather get more meat or "special" veggies (green peppers, spinach) than another inch of bread.
It should be 12" long if it's a "foot long sub" but stop skimping on the good stuff.

11 inches could be a foot if you round up from 11/12=0.917=1. On the other hand, it could be called a sub-footlong. All in all, though, if it's 11 inches long, it's about a foot long.
Besides, what about girth?

A sub-footlong, truth in advertising for sure!
I agree that girth should be measured as well. If the sub is a foot long but skinny as a pretzel, then who are they fooling?

Wow! The Subway foot-long sandwich has inched back into the news today. It appears that the foot-long will now indeed be 12 inches, plus or minus a few crumbs. There will be no more reaching the end of the 11th inch and taking one more bite, chewing for a minute, and thinking, "Gee, that tasted suspiciously like air. I mean, it didn't taste at all like the other part of the sandwich."
Quote: | As part of the settlement proposal Monday, Subway will provide new training materials with amended franchisee protocols “which had previously allowed for a small tolerance in the size of a footlong sandwich” to mandate that sandwiches must measure the full 12 inches.
Subway will also begin compliance inspections to ensure restaurants are following the guidelines, and enact stricter penalties to locations that fail to meet the new bread standards. |

Glad you mentioned that. I was surprised to learn this when I did some grunt work for an uncle a couple years ago. I would think a foot long sandwich being less than 12" long isn't nearly as egregious as the actual dimensions of all lumber being less than the listed size.
