Happened to me today.  That was a new experience.  Seemed different than when I've seen males strutting around doing their mating dance.  This definitely seemed like "You're on my turf, I don't want you here, get out!"  This was on Chatter Creek trail on my way back down.  No hikers or grouse were injured during the standoff fortunately.

This beastie was chasing my pickup down the road one day.  I stopped and this happened.

What's especially fun about sock puppets is that you can make each one unique and individual, so that they each have special characters. And they don't have to be human––animals and aliens are great possibilities

The grouse I saw today made that same sort of gurgling sound as the one in your video, but it also sort of clucked like a chicken, and it distinctly hissed at me.  Whenever a critter, be it snake, lizard, mammal or whatever, hisses, that's not a friendly sound.

This isn't unusual, they are nesting and have babies now, so will be on high alert.  I was warned today on my hike by a feisty lady grouse.  I didn't see any babies, but it was doing the broken wing drag along to get me away from something.  Rocky was very interested too......smile.gif

Mine didn't do the broken wing routine, but it did flutter it's wings at me.

Safety glasses this time of year.  Grouse can fly up and peck your eyes out......Many have lost sight because of this.  You were lucky.    eek.gif

It's scary out there.  I had a chipmunk sneak attack my pack the day before while Billy the goat was distracting me.

The book Up: A Mother and Daughter's Peakbagging Adventure by Patricia Ellis Herr describes a hilarious (after the fact) encounter with a terrifying grouse when she was hiking with her children.

Last year we got charged by a hen along Bridge Creek on the way to Stehekin. Then at Moore Point 2 days later, a hen walked up to our picnic with 5 chicks and just started pecking around our feet. Her confidence had me worried

Enough is enough.  If they don't give you a heart attack, they attack directly.

This avian terrorism will not stand.

That's it. There is no way I'm going hiking and risk getting attacked:

Doe deer will give a good stomping if you get too close to a fawn. Motherhood brings out the instinct for sure. Moose are by far the worst though.

The avian flew.

I love the smell of deet in the morning.
The smell, you know that deet smell, the whole mountain.
Smelled like... victory.
