Some years ago, they were having a few break-ins at the Pasayten TH's... I was going on a two week pack trip with my horses, so I left my truck and camper unlocked at the TH. Left nothing of value inside.
When we got back, I had a note on my windshield... from the County Sheriff... "Found you vehicle unlocked, so we locked it for you." lol...
I tend to lock my truck nowdays, but never leave anything of value inside... No charger cables or gps mounts visible... No spare change in the console or ash trays... No newer clothes/gear... Just maybe an a scatter of old jeans, t-shirt, and shoes for a change after I get back.
Actually have never had a problem in all the years of horse and hiking trips... from 1972 thru 2013... and that is a lot of trips...
I'd go back to what I said before if I caught them in the act. I'd say they threatened me with physical harm. You've got their ID, their license number and vehicular damage. who are the authorities going to believe...?

Someone on the interwebs had suggested stickers on cars advertises for a theif to break in.
From Patagonia to "student driver", these things mean something to the criminal mind.
If they're after gear and not getting caught, both of the above indicate both things.
