This may seem like a condescendingly obvious no-brainer but…. A lot of tent and tarp set-ups call for using your poles upside down. That not only puts the handles in the dirt and mud but they can also move around more that if the pointed end is down. If they are not being used with something that has a floor just do my handy “insert screw in the handle mod”. Place a 1.5 inch framing screw in the top of each handle (being careful not to interfere with the strap adjustment). Then just back it off a half inch when you need to place it into the tarp grommet.

Are those screws that tough? seems like it would be prone to bend/snap.

If you think about it there should be almost no stress at all on the screw. The guy lines and tent/tarp are pulling with equal force in opposite directions. The screw is just holding it in place.

Kite, before you do that check out Leki's camera attachment for their poles. Leki makes good poles and this looks like a good add on.

much cheaper
Using the female insert use a stud for the camera or a short bolt for the tent.

Not cheaper than my wood screws They cost around $5.00 per 100. That's $0.05 each.
edit: the other problem is that a tent/tarp grommet hole is too small for a bolt head or even most screw heads.

Nice, its seems that my trekking poles get used less for hiking and more as tent poles or a backrest and now a mono-pod.

I'd rather not use wood screws to mount my camera to the pole
Those are good screws in your link BTW. However they don't come in large enough quantity for me. I buy these x7500

Notice the screw I used has a SMALL hex head. That was for two reasons; frst, the head is small enough to go through my tarp grommet and two, a small allen wrench weighs a lot less than a screw driver.
BTW, who said anything about cameras anyway. That had to come up by Kite of all people. I get intimidated every time I see his photos. I think he is doing a pretty good job of holding the camera still as it is.

Has anyone ever found a good way to attach two poles together, end to end, to make a longer pole for a taller shelter?

Maybe use kite's idea in both poles and attach them with an "all thread" style of bolt?

Very good idea. I'm going to look at it closer, but I might want it to be just a little stronger.

You probably have cork handled poles like I have.
