Today's Seattle Times has a notice of the death of R. Duke Watson, a remarkable Northwest mountaineer. Here is the paid notice that ran in the paper: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/seattletimes/obituary.aspx?page=lifestory&pid=142327975 And here is my 2006 profile of Duke from the Northwest Mountaineering Journal: http://www.mountaineers.org/NWMJ/06/061_Watson1.html Mountain soldier, pioneer climber and skier, conservationist, adventurer, and family man, Duke continues to inspire me. He lived to 94, and will be fondly remembered by his many friends.

MA R. Duke Watson
Thanks for posting this Lowell. Have passed it on to Mike Plummer, Pres of the 10th Mtn Div Assn, and to the Mt Rainier Chapter of the 10th Mtn Div, also posted on the 10th Mtn Div Assn Facebook. The ranks get thinner and thinner and are now being filled with the soldiers from the new 10th Mountain (Light).

Great pics. You don't often see movie-star looks and clown-white on the same person!

Cool photos. He is so young and vital. It is amazing how quickly we age. If anyone cares: The first photo is of the Tiedemann Glacier, probably from the Bravo Glacier on Mt. Waddington The third looks to be near the meeting point of the Ptarmigan, Kennedy, and Vista Glaciers on Glacier Peak The eighth is taken in the meadows on the south side of Cutthroat Peak The 12th photo is taken from the shore of Silver Lake beneath Mt. Spickard in the Redoubt area The 15th is also in the Cutthroat meadows looking up at the south buttress of the peak. The 17th photo is taken near Perfect Pass in the Pickets looking at the Challenger Glacier The 22nd is somewhat south of Mt. Redoubt. Mt. Spickard is the high peak to the left of Mox Spires.

Diitto that, and timeless. I wouldn't have known many of those pics were taken before I was even born.
