This was part of my first extended backpacking trip, July 2000 I think. Did the floods take it out completely completely? I was just reminiscing about the place and wondering if there is anything left.
Anyone have cool memories? I guess hot springs can be kind of nasty, but it was pretty cool as a 15 year old.

Interesting! I want to take a look around now.
I also had 2 fighter jets nearly give me a heart attack when I was there.

Not very likely. Look at the photos in this thread on what the area is like today. The river changed course and the channel is where that pool used to be & goes all the way to the steep hillside.

I never got to see Kennedy in its heyday, but when I passed through last summer I noticed a lot of mineral seepage. Here's 2 panos from the west side of the Whitechuck below the Kennedy/Whitechuck confluence:

There was a small pool of warmish water on the opposite bank, near the remnants of the old guard station and outhouse. It was very mucky; only put one finger in...

A shot from the end of the trail (cliff) above the confluence:

Never know what one might be able to accomplish with a shovel or two, a week to spare, and a great deal of determination...

Goddamn, contour, those are great photos.
I remember the brownish creeklets that flowed through the lower campground - they had rainbow slime on top of the water. At first I thought it was human-caused pollutants, but I learned the rainbow slime was natural chemicals. So it's not surprising to see the streams surfacing.

It deserves to be studied for the sake of Darrington tourism, I tell you! The FS probably won't do the initial heavy lifting, though. Maybe an ad-hock roundtable study group could explore the possibilities of a new/old Kennedy Hot Springs.

I didn't know this spot was so well-loved. I remember alternating between the river and the springs, seeing how long we could stand the cold before we needed to warm up again. Most of us had some Scandinavian heritage so our 14 y/o selves imagined there was a lot of pride at stake.
Thanks for those photos, Contour. Makes me want to get back there and poke around a bit.
