That's a great story, and you must think a lot of your grandfather to go through that for him! I had not heard of Cruiser Mountain until recently, and now it's come up several times. On of them is a chapter called "Bruiser Cruiser" in a book by Harvy Manning. You can read a marked-up manuscript scan here, file FreedomVersionA0004.pdf
Quote:
Now, the dreaded roof, the scene of shame. Clench jaw, breathe deep. But in calm air it was a no-hands stroll -- I passed the chicken-out point and grew a foot taller. I'd worried too much. Now we scrambled onto the false summit. And for the first time I saw Cruiser Peak . . . ... Monie [the leader] was too preoccupied to try to laugh me out of jaw-drooping, bug-eyed silence. What was scaring her? I didn't know. What was scaring me was the Thing of nightmares when I was a kid terrified by God and Hell, the Thing now symbolized in broad daylight by that horrid thrust of lava.
That man could write!

Thanks HumpnoocheeGirl! Thanks puzzlr! I do indeed think a lot of him, he was great man, strong as hell. That was indeed some fine writing! I wonder which route he speaks of?

Good job with your grandfather. My mom's not doing very well. Good job with your climb.

We went extremely light; headlamp, tiny alpine rack, light rope, food, water, helmet and harness.
You could go critter style and add a mylar blanket for another 2 oz.
