I haven't been up the Chiwawa River in a while and was interested in getting out there to enjoy the awesome views. I wasn't sure if the weather was going to cooperate today, but it turned out beautiful! I approached via the Carne Mtn Trail. Since I hadn't been up Carne yet, I headed there first. I reached the summit of Carne in just over two hours, which was nice. The views were scenic and enjoyable making for a fine start of the day.

From Carne I headed back and over to the saddle just past the branch with the Old Gib Trail. From the saddle the trail takes a high traverse over to Old Gib. The trail provides intermittent views to make the traverse pleasant along the way. Near the end of the traverse, I realized that Old Gib would require a fair amount of elevation loss to reach the easier southern slopes. The elevation loss didn't look very bad from far away. Anyway, I hiked the trail down and around until I found fairly brush free terrain to start up. The summit gain was a bit of a grunt! On the summit, I only took a short break because, unfortunately, a few miles and a 1000ft of gain still separated me from the trail down.

Well, I arrived back at the saddle 7hrs after I left. I guess, Old Gib is bit out there from here. In the evening light it was kind of cool to look over at Old Gib. I was fairly beat and was glad I did Carne first because I wouldn't have wanted to make the side trip now. I had thought of doing that. Anyway, I focused my attention on getting down the Carne Mtn trail and made the trhd just before dark!

A very pretty day to be out! Notes: There's still running water in the camp basin below Carne. Below Old Gib there is running water below the northwest face starting around 5800. Old Gib trail is a little hard to follow going below Gib's face at it gets a little lost in the grass. Glad I used trail shoes for this trip! Still a few bugs but not too bothersome. Trip Time 11.5hrs. The drive up the gravel road to the Phelps Creek Trhd was as fun as its always been. Some zooms from Carne.

Old Gib must really be a haul if you made it to Carne Pass in 2 hours (wow!) but still had an almost 12 hour day.
