peltoms: thank you for another detailed report. sad, of course. question about the termination point of the glaciers. let's say for 10 years straight we have a positive mass balance of the glaciers. how long would it typically take for that to show up at the termination point (where it would appear the glacier is extending its reach)? gb: after seeing those columbia ice field glaciers for the first time just a few days ago, i'd have to agree with your assessment. i only saw a few areas that looked to be crevasses, but more like old cracks.

Hurrah! Looking forward to climbing a glacier and crevasse-free Rainier within my lifetime. party.gif Goodbye, glaciers! Go back to the ice age from whence you came!

If there was 10 straight years of positive mass balance most active glaciers would have begun advancing. The response time was analyzed and published in 2001, for the region, fastest time 4 years. The lower the slope and velocity the slower the response.

Looks like the project was still ongoing in 2020. Was not able to find anything on 2021. https://glacierchange.wordpress.com/2020/08/30/north-cascade-glacier-climate-project-observations-2020-37th-field-season/

There are links to field reports through 2017 available on the North Cascade Glacier Climate Project home page and a link to the blog also. https://glaciers.nichols.edu/
