We were getting tired of staring into the fog at home so I went online and found some great off-season room rates in Cannon Beach. It turned out to be a great choice because the temperature inversion in the mountains applied to the coast as well. They had just had a week of sunshine and unseasonable warm temperatures with very little wind and we caught the tail end of it. We spent all afternoon on the beach and caught a pretty spectacular sunset.

The next day we drove a little south to one of my longtime favorite beaches at Hug Point. The tide was high, so we decided to continue on to Oswald West State Park and do some hiking. Neahkahnie Mountain offered a 5 mile hike with bit of elevation gain and a view so we headed up there. Great trail with a little scrambling at the top.

After Neahkanie, we headed down to Nehalem State Park and walked the sand dunes down the spit. The weather looked threatening but it was still pleasantly warm with no rain the rest of the day.

If you head there - be aware that most of the restaurants and stores are closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in Cannon Beach during the winter. State Parks are $5 daily or $30 for an annual pass.

I love Cannon beach and the Oregon coast. Reasonable prices, taxes low or none, lots of dog-friendly lodging, and surprisingly good winter weather. Your pictures capture it very well. Oswald West SP is a favorite. The hike down to Short Sand beach is a must-see. OW was Oregon's first governor, it was largely due to him that all Oregon beaches are public property. up.gif

Really pretty reflections, especially on your first photo. But I like the stormy shots also.
