"Outplay and outscore are two different things, sometimes". True, but outplay can be subjective.

Addicted to these matches, regardless of who is playing. arrow.gif What a victory for Costa Rica...Sets up a huge match between Uruguay and Italy!

That was a very beatable Portugal side..Lots of discussion. For example, Klinsmann starts us with a 1-5-4, which is a play-for-a-draw formation. However, after the early give away goal, we put the offensive pressure on, in 1-5-4, and dominate the run of play. How much better could we have done with Wolondowski upfront with Dempsey? Will he go 1-5-4 vs. Germany? The late goal is part coaching error mixed in with a lot of inexperience too. Klinsmann and the other bench folks were just as euphoric as the players, meanwhile Ronaldo is standing wide, right in front of them, when Bradley gave away that last questionable midfield offensive surge. Finally, the last substitute for USA was a 3rd central defender to protect high balls in the middle. Where did he go on the Ronaldo cross? Could Howard have cut that cross off with a sprint off his line? So close yet so far. Tom

So does the US coach get together with his buddy (the German coach) and agree to just play for a draw so both teams advance?

The US has shown they can be dangerous at times, so I would guess that Germany would be happy to take a draw and win the group. Germans are pretty good at being pragmatic. Except for those few occasions they decided they wanted to take over the world.

they have done it in the past... how all soccer games look to Americans "the next 80 minutes were played out as a grotesque and interminable kickabout." I expect both teams to "park the bus in front of the goal".

Since I have no expectations of forgiveness, I don't do it in the first place. That loop hole needs to be closed to everyone.

US played a good game against Portugal. The last 45 seconds were just what happens at the top levels with top players. No one can play a perfect game.

Pretty good performance by USA against a tough (and better) Germany thanks to Portugal. up.gif

Despite the 1-1-1 record during the Group Stage, I was pleased with the performance of Team USA during the Group Stage. They played a very tough Ghana team which had a direct hand in ousting them the prior two World Cup tournaments, then outplayed Portugal most of their game except for the last minute and final score, and then held their own against Germany while having opportunities near the end to tie the game. And when you consider that Altidore, arguably Team USA's biggest offensive threat (next to Dempsey), was nearly completely out of the Ghana game and completely out of the other two games, Team USA should feel good about how things have fared thus far. Team USA traveled further during the Group Stage than any other team in the tournament. They are also one of only two teams (with Switzerland being the other) to play a game in the wickedly hot & humid Amazonian city of Manaus and be moving on to the next round. Several countries with historically good football teams are not moving on to the next rounds, including England, Italy, Portugal, and the previous World Cup champion Spain. Team USA has lasted longer in the tournament than those countries' teams, despite being placed in the "Group of Death" and not expected to get out of the Group Stage. ------------ Some positives to consider, for the next game: -> Team USA sat a couple of key players during the game against Germany. This gave more experience to their well-rested substitutions while at the same time giving much needed rest to key players. -> At last report, Altidore is expected to play in the next game... which would be a huge boost to the team's chances. -> Ending up as the #2 team in Group G actually gave Team USA an extra day of rest heading to the next round. Group G's #2 team (USA) plays Group H's #1 team on Tuesday afternoon, the last game of the Knockout Round. In contrast, Group G's #1 team (Germany) has to play Group H's #2 team on Monday. That extra day of rest might be huge for Team USA.

Redwic et al, Good summary. Belgium is a good match up for us. If Michael Bradley can get it going(he didn't today) things would be a lot easier for us because we could hold the ball a little more. Anyway..Germany is always one of the top sides. They took care of their business; we took care of ours...including some luck, and got some help from that rascal Christiano Ronaldo. Tom

The group outcome was just about optimal for Germany because they came out top seeded and one of their top rivals was eliminated. Germany's 4-0 destruction of Portugal in the first game was a real boon for the U.S. and Germany.

World Cup 1994, a nefarious plot
