if you know what that means for me this year. I've got to do something extra special for this year's B-day hike. Anyone else turning over a new decade?

I do. It means you are a young man.

I remember my parents getting gag gifts when they turned 40.

B-days mean nothing to me. Without a calendar, no one would know their age. "Seize the day!" was the saying by students in the Middle Ages. Applies now too.

I remember my ex-brother in law at age 30 getting an over the hill party with all the preparation H and junk...(this would have been like around 1990 give or take). I even laughed at it then, now even more.
I kinda got a surprise party like that at 40 (missed anything like that for my 50th a few years ago).

I spent my 40th in an awesome rain storm back in March 40 has been surreal. My parents were old when they hit that year. I don't think I have grown up yet

1974?
I was a Cat A bike racer in that year, managing a bike shop.
That was a couple of lifetimes ago for me.

So what's the big deal with 40? It's hardly a milestone. At 40 (with a little luck), you still have most of the years of your adult life ahead of you. You still have more miles of trails and more summits to look forward to ahead of you than behind you. Enjoy it.

I will. I would only go back if I could have the benefit of my cumulative experience (what little I have compared to some here) with which to guide me in my restored youth. I have a much greater capacity to enjoy the whole wilderness package (not just the tops of mountains) now than when I was 25.
Still, at near 40, I'm hoping that practical reasons (read: job) won't keep me in eastern Washington too much longer. Week after week of sunshine isn't my style. I'd really like to settle long term in the rain where I grew up.
