External Compression Headache is caused by any type of headwear. This includes headwear that places pressure on the head — including tight hats, helmets, headbands and goggles. It is not known why some people are more sensitive than others to this type of pressure. External compression headaches can affect anyone who uses headwear. The headaches are more common among people who have migraines. It is believed to affect about four percent of the population. It is also referred to as "swim goggle headache". These headaches can be brought on by such innocuous sources as wearing a halter top (presses against the neck), earplugs (presses against the jaw and inner ear), or wearing even a tiny hair clip (compresses the scalp). There is no known preventative treatment except to avoid the offending trigger. However, once symptoms arise and the trigger is removed, "Triptan"-type migraine treatment is effective.
Due to the cold weather I decided to wear a cap most of the day on my last hike. Too bad, because almost immediately I could feel a headache coming on my forehead. And it lasted all day, even after took off the cap. And I had the cap on loosely, so loose I could put a finger between the cap and my forehead. I've had this problem a long time and routinely avoid headgear of any kind. The only solution if I have to wear headgear is to take strong headache relief pills as long as I have the headgear on and probably after it's off. ""Triptan"-type migraine treatment" is probably too hard to get (doctor's prescription) and expensive. So anyone else have this problem? Any solutions you have come up with?

Never had headache problems, but I don't really like having my head covered unless I need shade. In moderately cold conditions, I've found that keeping my ears sealed off with muffs or encapsulating headphones does the trick. If I'm working hard, I actually appreciate the heat and moisture loss through my scalp, provided my ears are protected.

My friend has "free standing" ear muffs....no straps, bands, etc. They just stretch over your ears and the foamy tension keeps them on. He loves them even though I mercilessly ridicule him for their alien appearance. Tom

Never had problems with this before I had brain surgery 1 year (-6 days) ago. Now it's an issue. I've made some looser hats.
