Poem for Mary Ann
I wanted to follow Rimbaud
Into the fire
Into the green glaciers
Of absinthe
Down the dark stairs into the wine
That always let me finish
The poems
I had to write
You preferred the blue smoke
Of old mountains
And moons,
Those old mothers came to you
In daylight
Their crystals still sparkle
In your fading eyes
We’re crones now
You, stout in a black coat
And a brave red hat
Me, thin, the skin
Hanging like old curtains
On my bones that Time
Has not yet broken
You’ll go to a sweat lodge,
I’ll go home,
Study the map,
Find another mountain.
