The WA state motto is "alki," which roughly translates to "by an by," a colloquial term meaning "a future time or occasion" as in the Christian hymn In the Sweet By and By. I've also seen alki translated as "hope for the future."

OK thanks, I should have known. Wikipedia to the rescue:
Quote:
The Denny Party landed at Alki Point November 13, 1851, and platted a settlement of six blocks of eight lots. The original name of the settlement was "New York Alki," "Alki" being a word in Chinook Jargon (Wawa) meaning "eventually" or "by and by."
