Wow, recalling 237,000 pounds! From the second link: FSIS advises all consumers to cook all egg products to a temperature of 160 degrees F as verified by a food thermometer. Some eggs do contain Salmonella bacteria, since the bacteria can be inside the hen’s ovaries and is in the egg before the shell is formed. So if you cook the eggs to 160 degrees would these potentially contaminated eggs be safe? If Salmonella can lurk inside the chicken's ovaries, then it sounds like most any eggs can be contaminated.

That is what I would think. I know I like my eggs not so done so I'm glad they are doing this. Think I will hold off buying more for a bit.

This is true of ANY egg, once salmonella crossed over to being able to be inside the egg. I will note, however, that, as I understand it, it's rather rare to find salmonella in an egg - certainly in quantities that would make most people sick. The vast majority of salmonella cases are from contamination from outside sources, rather than undercooked eggs. But it is theoretically possible from ANY undercooked egg. Won't stop me from having over-easy eggs with runny yolks, though. smile.gif

Basically there's risk eating any undercooked chicken product. Yes fully cooking eliminates much of the risk.

I'm guessing that the most common use of Ovaeasy, at least for backpacking breakfasts, is scrambled eggs and that scrambling them easily gets the eggs beyond 160 degrees, so it's probably not a worry for this purpose. Agreed?

I can tell you if you cook eggs like I do over a backpacking stove they are usually well-done. Me in fantasy land cooking. Reality "Quit doing that! Are you eating bugs?!? AHHHHHHH! Oh crap, I just burnt dinner" agree.gif

Just FYI: some of the PackitGourmet meals included eggs from this batch. If you bought one of the meals that included eggs from the recall, you should have gotten a mail by now from PackitGourmet with details on how to get a replacement/refund, but if for some reason they don't have your info, you might want to check with them to see if what you have is from the same batch. --Gray
