Title twists the finding toward hiking, but applies. I assume women would benefit as well, even though they were not part of this study.

The results suggest that the more a man walked, and the more vigorously he walked, the lower his risk for hip fracture as he aged, the authors reported. For men whose primary activity was walking, doing so at least four hours a week was associated with a significant drop in hip fractures -- a 43 percent lower risk than walking less than one hour a week. "It's well known that physical activity helps to prevent hip fractures, that it helps to build bone and muscle tone. It can help with balance, too,"

Weight-bearing exercise increases bone density and muscle mass. Weight workouts are probably the best thing you can do. Absent injuries or deleterious preconditions, runners with basically sound knees have healthier knees than people with basically sound knees who don't run. Use it lose it.

Some people have better things to do with their lives than walking the dog. Some don't.

It doesn't work well if you walk off a cliff though.

Yup, if I had only been hiking (or skiing!) last Friday afternoon, I wouldn't have been wrestling with the calf and thus would not have had my fibula twisted beyond it's breaking point... Therefore the study applies to broken legs as well! wink.gif

Frosty, Lucky enough to live where it snows in the winter! smile.gif
